How to Calculate Your BMI

Your BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a calculation based off a person’s height and weight to determine their health. This number is used to evaluate whether an individual is under weight, in normal range, overweight, or obese based off the range the result falls into. This is often a number referred to in health care as most Primary Care Physicians, or PCPs, use this number to assess a patient’s healthiness.

Some employers also use this range to determine an employee’s health regarding their insurance policy and whether they get a lower or higher rate for their coverage.

While the BMI is a good indicator of health it is not all determining. Some people have a body typethat does not fall into the normal standard which can skew the results.

A person who is thin, does not eat well or exercise may have a low BMI. While someone who is muscular and exercises regularly may have an elevated BMI. Clearly the in normal range person is not as healthy as the one who exercises. So these factors need to be taken into consideration.

The BMI works most consistently for those with a normal activity level and lifestyle or for those who are obese. Individuals who are not truly healthy may present as so while those who are healthy may appear to be overweight.

At ageRejuvenation, we use an InBody 570 to perform a comprehensive analysis of weight and body composition. This state-of-the-art technology uses a Biometric Impedance Analysis to measure your actual body composition. Much easier than some of the other methods involving pinching or dunking, which is the analysis of external body fat using calipers or Hydrostatic Underwater Weighing which involves being fully nude and dunked in a tank 3 times to assess your body composition. For this method of determining body composition you are asked to stand on a scale, removing only your socks and shoes, to allow the current to measure the amount of fat, muscle, bone, and water from head to foot.

Every patient will receive an in-depth print out of their results. This testing is used to determine a patient’s Body Mass Index as well as other important numbers such as percent body fat, body muscle, and even visceral fat which is the fat around your organs. Correctly understanding both your BMI and overall body composition allows you to better understand your health. The InBody even gives suggestions on which areas of your composition need to improve by gaining more muscle or losing fat. Whether you are just interested, an athlete, or someone who is looking to improve their health understanding your BMI as well as your body composition is the first step.

THE BELOW BMI RANGES ARE USED FOR ADULTS 21 AND OVER:

Underweight – below 18.5 is considered to be underweight. This indicates the person needs to gain body fat and muscle to be in a range that is sufficient for optimal metabolic processes. If you test into this category, please see a health care professional to help you understand your numbers as well as determine if there are any changes in your lifestyle that may need to be made.

Healthy – 18.5 to 24.9 is considered to be in a healthy weight range. It is always important to ensure you are eating healthy, well-balanced meals and exercising, but this is seen as an ideal weight range.
